K12Linux.org is an Open Source, Linux-based Terminal Server and Thin Client platform built upon the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP.org). K12Linux EL6 is a compelling upcoming release because it is based on Enterprise Linux 6, with maintenance updates until the year 2017. For over 10 years, LTSP is in use by tens of thousands of schools, libraries, community centers, churches and businesses worldwide as a method to deploy large numbers of low cost and easy to maintain desktop computers. Extreme cost savings can be realized in both acquisition and ongoing management expenses. Many schools globally have deployed hundreds or thousands of old donated computers, no longer fast enough for business purposes, but they are great as thin clients running basic desktop applications on powerful central servers. Significant cost savings are realized in management and maintenance as all software and user data is centralized on servers. The clients themselves are stateless (no disk), so they are largely interchangeable. If a particular computer dies, simply unplug it, plug in a spare from the closet, and you are quickly up and running. School districts often have no full-time tech support staff on each campus due to the simplicity and ease of maintenance of LTSP deployments. To learn more, visit fedorahosted.org
